KSS has introduced cohort entry for our five year olds. Children are able to start school in cohorts after they have turned five. There will be two entry points in terms 1, 2 and 3: one on the first day of term and one at a mid-point (week six) during a term, and one on the first day of term four.
Research in Aotearoa New Zealand has shown that when five year olds are able to enter in groups together the following benefits occur:
Cohort entry helps tamariki to settle into school better because they are starting school alongside other children
It increases well-being
It helps tamariki make connections
It increases their sense of belonging
It decreases their anxiety
It increases their engagement in learning.
Schools using cohort entry have said that they have noticed tamariki settle in to school more quickly.
There is less disruption to the classroom learning due to the planned entry compared to the individual and ad hoc entry throughout the year.
Cohort entry does not replace the legal requirement that a child start school by the age of six. Parents, caregivers and whānau can still choose to not enrol their student before then.
Please make a time to come and meet the principal, complete your enrolment and tour the school about three months before your child’s fifth birthday.
Term One: | Entry one – Wednesday 29 January
Term Two: | Entry one – Monday 28 April
Term Three: | Entry one – Monday 14 July
Term Four: | Entry – Monday 6 October |
